The purpose of the teleological argument is to present complex details of the universe as evidence that it was designed by an intelligent mind. It suggests that since the universe is so compound and full of fine-tuned intricacies, there must have been a designer who implemented these specific details in order to create a fully functioning and sustainable universe. These details have been found from a biological perspective, as well as from a cosmological scale. The teleological argument is commonly used to provide evidence for the existence of the theistic God, or at least an intelligent designer. In contrast, those who are against the teleological argument generally believe that the universe is a result of an accidental ex plosion. Although there are many theories that use the teleological argument to provide strong support for intelligent design, there are also well-developed theories that oppose the teleological argument. A philosopher who presents several contradicting arguments to the teleological argument is David Hume. In his writing, The Dialogue Concerning Natural Religion, he presents his critique of the teleological argument and expresses his opposition through the fictional character Philo. The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - 878 Words
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge and his friend, William Wordsworth, put together a collection of their work called Lyrical Ballads. It contained Coleridgeââ¬â¢s famous poem Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This collection is widely recognized as the initiation of the shift towards modern poetry and British Romantic literature. Although the poemââ¬â¢s deliberate use of antiquated language differed from romantic poetryââ¬â¢s use of modern language of the time, it is still considered influential within the romanticism movement (Green). The poemââ¬â¢s influence in British Romanticism affected later authors and other works, including Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born in England on October 21, 1772 (Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge). Coleridge began his education with the pursuit of becoming a Clergyman, which was his fatherââ¬â¢s wish. He soon changed subjects in response to the influence of William Frend who held Unitarian beliefs. Later he became friends with Robert Southey, and they made plans to set up a commune in America under the belief of equal government for all. They both married, but soon afterwards Southey abandoned their plans to pursue law. Coleridge began building his writing career and he and Wordsworth published their collection Lyrical Ballads in 1798 (Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge). Although, overall the cultural changes are working for Disney, it doesnââ¬â¢t always work. Disneyââ¬â¢s interactive division is losing money and the film division has had some bombs, which resulted in job loss. Some also believe that by not putting a lot of emphasis on the animation aspect that Disney is diminishing the companyââ¬â¢s core brand strength and legacy. Iger says, ââ¬Å"When you deal with a company that has a great legacy, you deal with decisions and conflicts that arise from the clash of heritage versus innovation versus relevance. One thing you would always hear is that Southwest employees ââ¬Å"OWN IT! â⬠they are empowered to come up with ideas and carry them out. This is not only for the ââ¬Å"funâ⬠things but also for process changes. Southwest has a whole department dedicated to their culture. For me this was a great change, however, for others they were reluctant to embrace the changes, even the station leaders pushed back. When Southwest first came in the picture people were scared, scared of change, losing jobs, changing roles, scares of just about anything. Performance dropped, and more accidents started happening at work. After a while everyone got used to the way things are done

Characteristics of an epic hero Essay Example For Students
Characteristics of an epic hero Essay A hero is someone with the emotional capacity to alter significantly, the lives of others for the better. In some cases, physical accommodation is necessary as well. The epic, Beowulf, by an unknown poet, accurately portrays the characteristics of an epic hero. Strong and intelligent, the hero in the story, Beowulf, defeats many evils and pieces many nations back together. Frequently, Beowulf performs courageous tasks, which determine the fate of many nations, and his actions reflect heavy, timeless values. These characteristics are evidence of Beowulfââ¬â¢s heroism. Beowulf, who claims to be the mightiest warrior in existence, courageously destroys any monster in his path. As he converses with Hrothgar, king of a land terrorized by the evil monster Grendel, he expresses his power shown in the past. Beowulf tells Hrothgar, ââ¬Å"I drove Five great giants into chains, chased/All of that race from the Earth,â⬠speaking of his evil-fighting past (154-155). Raising justice against these monsters takes a lot of strength, which many men do not have. Beowulf, however, carries the necessary amount of power to complete these tasks. Later on, when Beowulf finally gets in front of Grendel, ââ¬Å"He who had come to them from across the sea, â⬠¦ had driven affliction/Off, purged Herot clean,â⬠just as he has promised. Beowulf puts forth his best effort and kills Grendel, even with strength left in him (Lines 347-349). This is something no ordinary man can do. Beowulf carries such strength, which allows him to defeat almost anything and anyone. Beowulfââ¬â¢s feats almost always determine the fate of one or more nations. For instance, After Beowulf marvelously defeats Grendel, ââ¬Å"Old and young rejoiced, turned back From that happy pilgrimage, mounted their hard-hooved Horses, high-spirited stallions, and rode them Slowly toward Herot again, retelling Beowulfââ¬â¢s bravery as they jogged alongâ⬠(Lines375-379). The men of Herot are so happy that Grendel is gone and they can now live the lives of free men. Due to Beowulfââ¬â¢s might, they no longer need to fret about the destruction occurring all around them. In addition, after Beowulf practically came back from the dead and defeated Grendelââ¬â¢s mother, the Geats, ââ¬Å"Thanked God that their leader had come back unharmedâ⬠(Line582). The actions of the Geats show just how much Beowulfââ¬â¢s actions affect them. They all cheer throughout the land. Because Beowulf heard of Grendelââ¬â¢s infamous actions and even witnessed them himself, he saved the lives of many men in different lands. Beowulf reflects many timeless values such as honor and having a strong will. Not considering the matter fully, ââ¬Å" leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyoneââ¬â¢s/Answer,â⬠so that he may fight Grendelââ¬â¢s mother, at the end leaving her writhing in her home (Lines450-451). The fact that Beowulf takes himself into the lake with hardly a second thought, shows the amount of courage he carries. Wherever he may be, Beowulf takes on whatever challenge is in front of him, almost breaking the fetters of mortality. Beowulf holds endless honor; he communicates this with his telling to Wiglaf of the way he has saved his society. Lying in livid wounds, defeated, Beowulf says to Wiglaf, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢I can leave/This life happy; I can die, here,/Knowing the Lord of all life has never/Watched me wash my sword in blood/Born of my own familyââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (lines 752-755). The honor Beowulf contains has saved his nation. As a mortal man, he helps many escape the wraths of monsters and live in riches, and does it all without completing a task, which is not noble. Overall, the mighty warrior, Beowulf, performs many actions which cannot be performed by any other men and which determine the future circumstances of many. When faced with a challenge, the warrior takes it on without issue. On behalf of the men whom he journeys with, Beowulf will do anything. Accurately, he fits every ancient aspect of a hero, in existence. Without a doubt, Beowulf has the capacity of many strong men together.

Writing Custom Queries in Spring Data JPA
Writing Custom Queries in Spring Data JPAWriting custom queries in Spring Data JPA is easy because you can focus on your business without having to worry about the details. For example, when you read queries, you need to know how they work and what sort of data each one is based on. In order to do this, you should learn about the structure of a query first. When you write custom queries in Spring Data JPA, you are actually describing how the query is supposed to be executed. This is made possible by the following methods of operation. If the data that you have is quite limited, you can use the commands that help you get a subset of the information that you need. The 'groupBy'orderBy' commands help you narrow down the search so that you can get only the information that you need. The second method that you can use to write a custom query is to get the data and then group or order it according to how the user wants it. The 'get' command, for example, will be used to get the data that you want from a table. The grouping and ordering of the results, then, can be done using the 'groupBy'orderBy' commands in the 'get' method. The next way that you can use to write a custom query is to retrieve the required data from the database using a search command. This search command can be used to find the details of any column that is specified by the name that is specified in the SQL query. Then, you can use the 'where' command to get the data that you want for any column that is specified by the name. The third method that you can use to write a custom query is to change the input data of the query and then examine the output of the query. When you change the input data of the query, the way the query is executed will be changed. For example, if you make the input data more complex, you can use the 'groupBy'orderBy' method to do a group buy. Finally, the fourth method that you can use to write a custom query is to specify the parameters for the query. This parameter will be the i nput data that is used for the query. After that, you can use the standard way to describe how the query is going to be executed, which is by using the 'groupBy' orderBy' method.By understanding how the four methods of operation are used, you will be able to focus on the business issues while writing your queries in Spring Data JPA. Once you know the way that you can change the strategy for executing the queries, you will be able to customize the way that the business works.
Ignorance And Racism Essays - Congo Free State, Heart Of Darkness
Ignorance and Racism Ignorance and Racism Joseph Conrad develops themes of personal power, individual responsibility, and social justice in his book Heart of Darkness. His book has all the trappings of the conventional adventure tale - mystery, exotic setting, escape, suspense, unexpected attack. Chinua Achebe concluded, "Conrad, on the other hand, is undoubtedly one of the great stylists of modern fiction and a good story-teller into the bargain" (Achebe 252). Yet, despite Conrad's great story telling, he has also been viewed as a racist by some of his critics. Achebe, Singh, and Sarvan, although their criticisim differ, are a few to name. Normal readers usually are good at detecting racism in a book. Achebe acknowledges Conrad camouflaged racism remarks, saying, "But Conrad chose his subject well - one which was guaranteed not to put him in conflict with psychological pre- disposition..." (Achebe, 253). Having gone back and rereading Heart of Darkness, but this time reading between the lines, I have discovered some racism Conrad felt toward the natives that I had not discovered the first time I read the book. Racism is portrayed in Conrad's book, but one must acknowledge that back in the eighteen hundreds society conformed to it. Conrad probably would have been criticized as being soft hearted rather than a racist back in his time. Conrad constantly referred to the natives, in his book, as black savages, niggers, brutes, and "them", displaying ignorance toward the African history and racism towards the African people. Conrad wrote, "Black figures strolled out listlessly... the beaten nigger groaned somewhere" (Conrad 28). "They passed me with six inches, without a glance, with the complete, deathlike indifference of unhappy savages" (Conrad 19). Achebe, also, detected Conrad's frequent use of unorthodox name calling, "Certainly Conrad had a problem with niggers. His in ordinate love of that word itself should be of interest to psychoanalysts" (Achebe 258). Conrad uses Marlo w, the main character in the book, as a narrator so he himself can enter the story and tell it through his own philosophical mind. Conrad used "double speak" throughout his book. Upon arriving at the first station, Marlow commented what he observed. "They were dying slowly - it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation lying confusedly in the greenish gloom" (Conrad 20). Marlow felt pity toward the natives, yet when he met the station's book keeper he changed his views of the natives. "Moreover I respected the fellow. Yes. I respected his collars, his vast cuffs, his brushed hair. His appearance was certainly great demoralization of the land he kept up his appearance" (Conrad 21). Marlow praised the book keeper as if he felt it's the natives' fault for living in such waste. the bureaucracy only cared about how he looked and felt. The bookeeper did not care for the natives who we re suffering less than fifty feet from him. He stated the natives weren't criminals but were being treated as if they were, but at the same time he respected the book keeper on his looks instead of despising him for his indifference. Conrad considered the Africans inferior and doomed people. Frances B. Singh, author of The Colonialistic Bias of Heart of Darkness said "The African natives, victims of Belgian exploitation, are described as 'shapes,' 'shadows,' and 'bundles of acute angles,' so as to show the dehumanizing effect of colonialist rule on the ruled" (269-270). Another similar incident of "double speak" appeared on the death of Marlow's helmsman. Marlow respected the helmsman, yet when the native's blood poured into Marlow's shoes, "To tell you the truth, I was morbidity anxious to change my shoes and socks" (Conrad 47). How can someone respect yet feel disgusted towards someone? Singh looks into this question by stating, "The reason of course, is because he (Marlow) neve r completely grants them (natives) human status: at the best they are a species of superior hyena" (Singh 273). As I have mentioned before, Conrad was not only racist but also ignorant. He would often mix ignorance with racism when he described the natives. "They howled and leaped and spun and made horrid faces, but what

Site, Sight, and the Spell Check Syndrome
Site, Sight, and the Spell Check Syndrome Site, Sight, and the Spell Check Syndrome Site, Sight, and the Spell Check Syndrome By Maeve Maddox Today I found a plastic bag on my front door. A yellow sticker identified it as a bag for the Scouting Food Drive. Being a writer and a grammar nazi, I never just glance at things like this. It is my curse to read labels in their entirety. In small print I was instructed to leave the bag, with food inside, in plain site on my porch. My first surge of censure was for the Scout leaders who had submitted incorrect copy to the printer. The second surge was for the printer who hadnt bothered to read the copy for errors before printing it. Then, at the very bottom of the sticker, I saw that the printing had been donated by a local corporate entity, a very large company with international sales. Im sure it must employ educated people to see to such things as printing and advertising. So why in plain site and not, as the context called for, in plain sight? Id bet that the person responsible knows the difference between site and sight and would redden in embarrassment if called on it. I think the error is a symptom of Spell Check Syndrome. Spell check catches only those misspellings that do not represent any word at all. It will catch such howlers as recieve, seperate, and dalmation, but not homonyms like site/sight, and rite/right. Computers are great, but they are no substitute for the human brain. Run spell check by all means. But then run your own eyes over your writing before submitting it. In its usual use, site (noun) is an area, a piece of ground, a place: This is the site of a prehistoric village. As a noun, sight is the sense of vision, or something seen: Louis Braille lost his sight at the age of three. A favorite tourist sight is the Tower of London. Sight can also refer to the device on a gun that helps one to aim: The sight on this rifle is slightly bent. Sight can be a verb: Tell me when you sight the buffalo herd. Sight occurs in several idioms: Keep the enemy in sight. Youre a sight for sore eyes (i.e., a welcome sight). His newest book is out of sight (beyond comparison)! (slang) Dear me, you look a sight (have a bedraggled or disreputable appearance)! Theyve got a sight of grandchildren (a great many). (dialect) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
